Luigi Datome is an Italian basketball player from Olbia, Sardinia. He started basketball because it was a popular sport in his family.  He played for Olbia basket youth teams until he was eventually signed by Mens Sana Basket Sienna. He played for the Serie A team from 03 to 07. With this team he won the Italian Supercup and Italian League in 2004. He played one season for Scafati Basket before he went on to play for Virtus Roma. He stayed there for five years winning Italian League Best Player Under 22 in 2009 and even Italian League MVP in 2013. In his MVP year, he averaged 16.4 points and 5.6 rebounds. These are not quite NBA statistics but still good.

On July 13, Datome signed a two-year deal with the Detroit Pistons worth $3.5 Million. This wasn’t that much for NBA standards, but he could finally play in the NBA. The problem was that he never got a lot of minutes. He spent most of the times on the bench and watched an awful Pistons team lose most of the nights.

On February 19, 2016, Datome was traded to the Boston Celtics. He became part of a rebuilding team. Again, this wasn’t a championship caliber team. He spent most of the time on the bench but got to start in the Celtics final regular season game. Here he dropped a game-high 22 points.

A month after his game-high performance, he left the NBA and joined Fenerbahce. He signed a two-year deal with the club. In his first year, he averaged 12.4 points and 4.4 rebounds, a lot better than in the NBA. The same year he won the Turkish Cup and Turkish League. He even went on to make it into the EuroLeague finals where the team fell short to CSKA Moscow in overtime. He did win Turkish League MVP and was selected All-EuroLeague Second Team.
2017 was even better. Fenerbahce went on to win the Turkish League again. The unique thing was that this year they won it all. Fenerbahce became a EuroLeague champion for the first time.

Datome still has a lot of good years to go, and we all hope he goes out and wins some more championships. He always plays for the Italian national team. The team competes for the European and FIBA world championship. Together with Gallo and Belinelli, they are an unstoppable trio. You never know, there is always a chance for a comeback into the NBA so he can become a champion once more.

  1. […] Datome has a lot of prices and awards under his belt in the Euroleague and other European competitions, such as a Euroleague Championship, two Turkish League Championships, and a Turkish League Finals MVP award with Fenerbahce. Over the years, he proved himself to be a very consistent player, and therefore he caught the eye of the Detroit Pistons and was offered a contract. […]
