Tomorrow, the Dutch basketball team under 16 will travel to Sofia, Bulgaria, to compete at the European Championship in the B Division under 16. The tournament will take place from August 10th till August 19th.

At the end of February, head coach Chris van Dinten already made an interesting prediction for his team. He said that the U16 team at least wanted to be ranked on the eighth place at the end of the tournament.

Tough Group Phase

The Orange Lions will have to face several strong opponents in the tournament. Ukraine, Poland, Bulgaria, Denmark, and Cyprus are drafted in group B, as well as the Lions. Though the Dutch team will face those strong countries, Keye van der Vuurst-de Vries has a feeling that the Lions will reach their goal. “I think the main reason why we will reach the quarter finals this year is that we have more talented players in this years’ selection compared with last year. Those players have the talent and skills to reach our goal. I think we are a great team that can push ourselves through the group phase if we do what coach Van Dinten asks us”. His teammate Rienk Mast agrees with that. “This year we will face two or three strong teams again. If we can play great games against the tough teams, I think we can make it to the last eight.”

Reaching their goal

Though the Orange Lions will face strong opponents, they are positive that they can reach their goal. Van der Vuurst-de Vries discussed the teams the Lions will face. “Those teams aren’t easy to beat. For example, Poland: they were only just demoted to the B division. Ukraine is always playing in the quarter finals. Bulgaria is playing for their own crowd. That is always difficult to play against. Denmark is always a team who cannot be underestimated. Last but not least, Cyprus. I think we have a chance to beat them, but like I said before, never underestimate your opponent.”

Including Keye van der Vuurst de Vries and Rienk Mast, twelve players are selected to compete at the tournament:
• Dimitri Maconda (Basketball Academie Limburg)
• Jamie Bergens (CBA)
• Keye van der Vuurst de Vries (Lokomotief Rijswijk)
